Avner Biron, Music Director and Permanent Conductor

The conductor and flutist Avner Biron is the founder, music director, and permanent conductor of the Israel Camerata Jerusalem since its establishment. Creativity, innovation, and originality characterize his diverse musical activities. Through intensive and inspiring work, he has brought the orchestra to a preeminent position in the world of Israeli music and to widespread international recognition.

Avner Biron creates original and interesting concert programs. In his work with the Camerata Orchestra, he brings rare works from the musical repertoire back to the Israeli concert stage, alongside classical masterpieces. He also encourages original Israeli composition by commissioning works from composers and performing them in Israel, on concert tours worldwide, and through recordings.

Under his leadership and baton, the orchestra dedicates a significant part of its activity to music education for students in Jerusalem and throughout the country. The orchestra under Biron's direction performs with great success on numerous concert tours in Europe, the Americas, and the Far East, in major concert halls in Amsterdam, Berlin, Leipzig, Bonn, Paris, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, Alaska, Beijing, Shanghai, and more. Biron's numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra have earned critical acclaim in Israel and abroad.

He has conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and the Beersheba Sinfonietta, and is invited to conduct orchestras worldwide. Avner Biron has served as the music director of several festivals, including the Abu Ghosh Festival and the "Music and Nature Days" Festival in the Galilee. He founded the "Galilee Soloists Ensemble," a virtuosic group that achieved international success in a short time and was invited under his direction for concert tours worldwide.

A large part of his work is dedicated to musical education. In 1994, he was appointed head of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. During his three terms, Biron led the academy to impressive artistic achievements. Among other things, he initiated the opening of a Department for Eastern Music, established the Academy's Chamber Orchestra, and founded the Faculty of Multidisciplinary Music. He was elected to serve as a member of the standing committee of the Association of European Conservatoires (AEC).

He began his musical career as a flutist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and as a solo flutist with the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He studied biology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and continued his conducting studies at the Vienna Academy of Music and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. His special approach to music and interpretation is influenced by his broad education in music and science. As a flutist, he performed frequently in recitals and chamber ensembles. He has directed and taught many masterclasses for flutists and flute teachers in Israel and abroad. As a teacher and educator, Biron has raised a young generation of flutists and senior flute teachers.

In 2005, Avner Biron won the Minister of Education's Prize for Excellence and long-standing artistic contribution in the field of music in Israel. In 2013, the Ministry of Culture and Sport awarded him the Arik Einstein Prize for creators who have contributed to the development of Israeli culture for generations.
